Domestic Employer UIF registration
1. What is UIF and when must a person register for it?
According to labour law if an Individual employs a Domestic Worker in a private household (gardeners included) for more than 24 hours in a month the Employer must register with the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF).
2. Does the Individual (Domestic Employer) or the Domestic Worker register for UIF ?
The Individual is registered for UIF. The UIF registration number is registered in the Employer's name and will stand until de-registered. The current Domestic Worker(s) are linked to the employer in the registration process. It is the the responsibility of the Employer to submit monthly declarations to declare the employees' details, salaries etc. for that specific month before the 7th of the following month, e.g. February 2011 info must be submitted and paid over on/before 7 March 2011.
3. What happens if I do not register with the UIF if I am employing a domestic worker for more than 24 hours in a month?
Apart from breaking the law your domestic worker will also not be able to claim UIF when he/she becomes unemployed due to any reason including retrenchment, illness etc. The domestic worker can also report you to Department of Labour/CCMA.
4. What deductions must be made ?
1% must be deducted from the employee's gross salary and 1% must be contributed by the Employer. Therefore 2% in total. E.g. a worker received a R2 000 salary, R20 to be deducted from his/her salary and R20 to be contributed by the Employer and paid over to the UIF.
5. How do I make payment to UIF?
Payment must be made directly to the UIF accompanied by the monthly declaration form.
6. Can you assist in the monthly declarations and payments?
Yes, we offer online payment service where we issue electronic payslip to the Domestic Worker, deduct necessary UIF amount, submit the monthly declaration form and make payment on your behalf. Payment can be done via credit card on this site or via EFT. You can get more info on our online domestic payment system here.
